This week, the construction of two new sections of pedestrian and cycling paths in Ventspils – in Staldzene by the shore of lake Būšnieku and in the prospectively planned Mežparka Street – has been completed and are now open to the public, informs the Ventspils Communal Administration.
This year, 2 new sections of more than 1 km were added to Ventspils’ cycling path network, bringing the total length of the cycling path network within the city limits to more than 70 km.
The first section of cycling paths was built in Staldzene along the shore of Lake Būšnieku, a 660-metre stretch running from the Boat Base to the existing cycling path, thus covering the full length of the path along the picturesque Lake Būšnieku through the forest. Until now, it was necessary to walk along the side of Staldzenes Street to get around Lake Būšnieku, but the construction of this section of the path will allow pedestrians and cyclists to safely and leisurely enjoy nature and the lakeshore. The construction of this section of the cycling path was carried out within the framework of the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund project “Latvian Action Programme for Fisheries Development 2014-2020 Sub-Measure 43.02 “Implementation of Community-Led Local Development Strategies” under activity 43.02.2 “Diversification of Activities in the Fisheries Sector and Other Sectors of the Marine Economy””.
A second section of the cycling path was constructed on the the prospectively planned Mežparka Street between the Beach 9 nudist entrance boardwalk and the Beach 10 boardwalk where the military heritage site of the 46th Coast Defence Battery and Fire Correction Tower is located. The new gravel stretch runs along the seafront for 430 metres, which will allow enjoyment of the seafront and the rich pine forest, giving the opportunity to see the wooded and grey protected dunes. In the future, a second phase of the project is planned here, with the construction of energy-efficient lighting. The first stage of the construction of this cycling path was carried out under the 14th round of the open call for projects of the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (hereinafter “EMFF”) “Latvian Action Programme for Fisheries 2014-2020”.
