On 1 November at 19.00 at the Concert Hall “Latvija”, as part of the world music festival “Porta 23”, the Cuban cellist and singer Ana Carla Maza will perform for the first time, creating her own musical universe that combines jazz, classical music and the colours of Latin American sounds. The concert in Ventspils will be her first performance in Latvia.
Critics say of 28-year-old Ana Carla Maza that with her cello she paints the frenzied luxury of her native Havana, the accents of Brazilian samba and the tragedies of Argentine tango. It is equally breathtaking and seductive. Her compositions are a mix of jazz, classical music and Latin American rhythms. Bahia, a place near Havana where Ana spent her childhood, occupies a special place in her work.
Born in Cuba into a family of musicians, it is no surprise that Ana Carla Maza started playing the piano at the age of five and took to the stage for the first time in Havana at the age of ten, playing the instrument she still calls her own: the cello. At the age of 12, she moved with her family to Spain, where she became involved in her father Carlos’ professional music projects, including two recordings.
Ana Carla Maza studied music in France, where she met cellist Vincent Ségal, who encouraged her to pursue a solo career. In 2016, she released her debut album “Solo Acoustic Concert”, followed by three more studio albums, the latest of which, “Caribe”, was released this autumn. – The new album tour saw Ana Carla Maza perform in many European concert halls and clubs.
The concert is organised by SIA “Kurzemes filharmonija” in collaboration with the Porta 23 World Music Festival, and funded by the European Regional Development Fund and the Ventspils State City Council. Tickets are available at the ticket sales network “Biļešu paradīze”, as well as at the box offices of the Concert Hall “Latvija” and the Theatre House “Jūras vārti”.
