It has been 15 years since the production Black Milk was created at the New Riga Theatre (JRT). This performance demonstrates that theatre doesn’t always have to be rooted in destruction and conflict. It can also be about harmony and beauty, even if tinged with sadness. A visually poetic production, it weaves choreography and documentary Latvian stories into a language of metaphors, telling of the lost paradise from which we all come and remember only faintly.
At the time, the production toured many countries—from Europe to Latin America—and this poetic story about the Latvian connection with nature and the cosmos became universal and resonated even far beyond Latvia.
Now, a new version of this production has been created—it is essentially the same, yet updated and refined. From the perspective of 2024, some things have inevitably changed as well.
