As part of the creation of the cultural route “Baltic Way”, a new tourist guide has just been launched, which invites you to get to know the Baltic small towns – curonians and Samogitians. The guide includes more than 100 of the most expressive objects related to the cultural history of the Curonians and Samogitians in Latvia and Lithuania. For the convenience of travelers, the objects are combined in 7 destinations in Kurzeme and 6 in Lithuania. The guide is available at the tourist information centres of Kurzeme and is free of charge.
Despite the fragmentation over many centuries, the major Baltic tribes – the Curonians, Zemgals, Seleucids, Latgalians, Samogitians, Upper Tahitians, Prussians and Yestvings – were able to defend themselves against the attacks of their neighbors, especially the Scandinavian and German orders, and were the last others in Europe to resist the German conquerors for the longest time. The brash of the White warriors echoed far beyond the borders of the white lands – the Scandinavians prayed to God to protect them against curonian invasions, while the ancient forests of Samogitia – thick and impenetrable, protected the Samogitians for many hundreds of years.
Over time, most of the Baltic tribes became extinct, but the history and customs of the Baltics are inherited by the Latvian and Lithuanian peoples. Therefore, we Latvians and Lithuanians, as descendants of the Baltics, must protect the fragile and unique particle of Baltic history and culture, and get to know it both ourselves and allow it to be revealed to enthusiasts of culture and history of other nations!
