The church was built in 1896. Legend has it that the church was built because the land steward of Labrags had a daughter, whom he wanted to marry off in the church, but at that time there was no such in Jūrkalne.
The church has a famous altarpiece – “Christ on the Cross and St. Mary Magdalene”, created in the 19th century by T. Sprengel.
