The “PORTA” World Music Festival is a collection of various cultures, experiences, and eras. Promoting world music genres in Latvia, this year “PORTA” invites you to a concert featuring the ensemble “Les Itinérantes” (France) and the musical group “JMO” (Switzerland, Senegal, Israel) at the concert hall “Latvija” in Ventspils.

The repertoire of “Les Itinérantes” encompasses eleven music styles, nine centuries, and 19 languages. True to their group name—“The Travelers”—the ensemble members journey from one time and place to another, creating images, stories, and feelings with their voices. Their music spans from the Middle Ages to Édith Piaf and Corsican polyphony.
The main theme of “JMO” is the portrayal of the art of storytelling, formed by three musicians: Jan Galega Brönnimann (Switzerland), Moussa Cissokho (Senegal), and Omri Hason (Israel). The trio seeks their path between traditional and contemporary music from Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. The sparkling sound effect of the kora (a 26-string African harp) meets the warm tones of the bass clarinet and Eastern percussion instruments in a flawless interplay. Listening to JMO’s music is an unforgettable experience, thanks to the fusion of diverse musical traditions into a single sound, the group’s unique composition, and their imaginative melodies and rhythms.

The concert is organized by SIA “Kurzemes filharmonija” with financial support from the Ventspils City Council and the State Cultural Capital Foundation.
