The ballad opera “Švejk – Then and Now” will feature songs of Ivars Vīgners and Valts Pūce with the lyrics of Jānis Peters and Pēters Brūveris.
Created 100 years ago by a Czech author, the fictional character Švejk is still an absolute favourite with readers and theatre enthusiasts, representing the common sense and one man’s struggle with stupidity of the official institutions and bureaucracy as such. The arrival of the good soldier Švejk on the theatre stages in Latvia is always accompanied by songs – ironic, merry, sad, and full of military humour. Švejk’s songs live on long after the end of the performance, including the songs “Darling, the Emperor Calls me to the War” or “Farewell Ladies”, and many others we occasionally end up singing, humming, and whistling irrespective of the year these timeless melodies were created.
Given that in the autumn of this year, the concert performance “Švejk – Then and Now” received huge appreciation from the audience, it will continue bringing joy to the audience the next year, when Švejk will visit Ventspils, Valmiera, Jelgava, Ulbroka, Riga, Aizkraukle, and other cities in Latvia.
