On March 28 at 19:00, the premiere of the new production by the Ventspils Theatre will take place at the Ventspils Cultural Center – a performance of Bertolt Brecht’s play Mother Courage and Her Children. The production is directed by Kārlis Neimanis, and both experienced Ventspils Theatre actors and young talents will perform on stage. Along with the actors, the intense events of the play will be musically brought to life by musicians from the “Ventspils Nonet,” under the direction of Kristaps Daubars.
This is director Kārlis Neimanis’ first production with the Ventspils Theatre. He shares about the performance: “The play will lead the audience through absurd life situations, where, despite the hopelessness, there is always hope for the best possible outcome – life. A good life. The performance is based on two perspectives: how the audience views the situations from the outside and how the characters experience them. This raises the question – does a person, being at the epicenter of events, have the chance not to step on the same rake again?”
Bertolt Brecht’s play Mother Courage and Her Children was written before World War II in Scandinavia, but its message remains relevant today. The play takes place during the Swedish-Polish Thirty Years’ War in 1624, when the small trader Anna Fierling, known as Mother Courage, travels through Europe with the Finnish 2nd Regiment, trying to survive and protect her children. The performance makes one reflect on what to believe in a time when different, seemingly irrefutable truths are voiced from all sides.
The performance features Ventspils Theatre actors – Simona Grieze, Ineta Kalniņa, Andris Lasmanis, Liāna Griķe, Vija Draviņa, Simona Pastore, Uldis Pabērzs, Mētra Zikmane, Laima Prūse, Sinta Daliņa, Rūdolfs Punkstiņš, Dāniels Strauts, Anita Kalniņa, Gints Kānītis, and Baiba Griķe. The musical accompaniment is performed by the “Ventspils Nonet,” with arrangements by Kristers Lauriņš. The choreography is created by Kristīne Angere, the set design by Kārlis Neimanis and Andris Lasmanis, and the costumes by Kārlis Neimanis.
The ticket price is 5 EUR. Tickets are available for pre-sale at “Biļešu paradīze” box offices.
