On December 21 – on the winter solstice in Ventspils, the traditional block pulling event will take place again, which is one of the oldest and most symbolic winter solstice rituals in Latvia. Right at lunchtime, the block will be dragged from Dzirnava Square to the Old Town Market Square, uniting the members of the amateur art collectives of the Culture Center and other interested parties in a joint ritual of passing away the winter darkness. Folklorists Iveta and Vidvudus Medeņi will invite the participants not only to participate in pulling the block, but also to participate in other solstice rituals that will take place in the Old Town market square, including the burning of the block, which symbolizes the passing of the old year and all the negativity, purification and preparation for the new cycle.
