In accordance with the Water Management Law, on 15 September Ventspils Blue Flag Beach will officially close this year’s bathing season by lowering the Blue Flag for the 25th consecutive bathing season. The equipment installed on the beach during the bathing season will also be gradually removed, informs the Ventspils Communal Administration.

This spring, Ventspils beach underwent various improvement works, which included clearing all the beach entrance footbridges of rotten sand in the dune area. During the winter, windy weather conditions caused a large amount of sand to blow into the dune area, blocking all the main entrances to the beach.

This year, around 250 cubic metres of sand were removed and deposited at the recreation areas at the Venta – at the end of Ābolu Street and Graudu Street – to clean beach entrance No. 6, which also serves as an entrance road for vehicles. After cleaning all the entrances, wooden footbridges were installed and the beach equipment was cleaned. This year, two major repairs were also carried out to the wooden footbridges at entrances No. 6 and No. 7, as the wooden planks had deteriorated and become worn during their use. At the end of the official bathing season, the installed beach equipment will be stored for the winter.

The works have been carried out within the framework of the project “Implementation of Practical Coastal Management Activities” (Project Registration No. 1-08/42/2023). The total project funding is EUR 200,000-, of which Ventspils’ co-financing of the project amounts to EUR 8,550-. The project is funded by the Latvian Environmental Protection Fund and supported by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development in partnership with the Latvian Local Government Association.
